• Fosphenytoin is indicated for the treatment of generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus and for the prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during neurosurgery in adult patients. It can also be substituted, short-term, for oral phenytoin in patients aged two years and older when oral phenytoin administration is not possible.
• Fosphenytoin is a water-soluble prodrug formulation of phenytoin. It received FDA approval in 1996 for use in epilepsy. It is most commonly used in acute scenarios as an anti-epileptic drug (AED) and a substitute for phenytoin when there are contraindications to phenytoin. Initially, its use was as a short-term oral substitute for oral phenytoin. However, it quickly gained acceptance as a prophylactic drug for patients undergoing neurosurgery.
