GHS Hazard Classification

Reported hazard statementsH400, H410

H400: Very toxic to aquatic life [Warning Hazardous to the aquatic environment, acute hazard]

H410: Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects [Warning Hazardous to the aquatic environment, long-term hazard]

Documented Uses

  • Used as pre- and post-emergence herbicide for control of broad-leaved weeds and annual grasses in barley, wheat, pastures, rangeland, and non-cropland; [HSDB]
  • Postemergence for most broadleaf weeds, some annual grass weeds in barley, wheat, fallow, pastures, rangeland, and noncropland.
  • Preparation ... G. Levitt, EP 7687 (1980 to DuPont); idem, US 4383113 (1983 to DuPont).
  • Sulfonyl urea used as pre- and postemergence herbicide.
  • Affects sensitive weeds through inhibition of the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS). Inhibition of ALS leads to the rapid cessation of cell division and subsequent growth processes in plants. Mode of action: Selective systemic herbicide absorbed through the roots and foliage and translocated to the apex of the plants. Symptoms appear within days, with death within 2-4 weeks.
  • In mammals, following oral administration, metsulfuron-methyl is excreted predominantly unchanged. The methoxycarbonyl and sulfonylurea groups are only partly degraded, by O-demethylation and hydroxylation.
