Derivatives of 2,3-butanediol are important as insecticides (Sapecron: acetal with methylcarbamate of salicylic aldehyde) and as intermediates in the pharmaceutical industry. 2,3-Butanediols have some interest as humectants and in the synthesis of polymers and plasticizers.
