• Used as a vitamin and veterinary nutritional factor (essential except in horses and ruminants); [Merck Index] Used as a nutritional supplement for foods; [FDA]
• Sodium (R)-pantothenate is isolated by reacting sodium beta-alaninate with (R)-pantolactone in methanol or ethanol (1 hour, 65 °C). On cooling, it crystallizes in the form of square platelets (mp 160 - 165 °C) and is highly hygroscopic.
• .beta.-Alanine, N-[(2R)-2,4-dihydroxy-3,3-dimethyl-1-oxobutyl]-, sodium salt (1:1): ACTIVE
• Topical application of pantothenate is widely used in clinical practice for wound healing.
• Distribution of pantothenate from plasma into liver was very rapid; during 10 min after iv admin about 80% of dose was cleared from plasma.
