OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED ONLY FOR ITS USE AS A BLOOD ANTICOAGULANT FOR BLOOD OR PLASMA THAT IS TO BE FRACTIONATED OR FOR BLOOD THAT IS TO BE STORED. THE ANTICOAGULANT EFFECT IS DUE TO THE CONVERSION OF IONIZED CALCIUM IN THE BLOOD TO NONIONIZED CALCIUM CITRATE.
