• Rufinamide is a triazole derivative drug structurally unrelated to any other anti-seizure drug (ASD). It was first developed in 2004 and later granted orphan drug status in October 2004. It was first marketed in Europe in January 2007. It was approved by the US FDA on November 14, 2008, for the adjunctive treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Interestingly, it was the first anti-seizure medication to reach the US market with a pediatric indication prior to approval for adults.
• Rufinamide is a unique anticonvulsant that is used in combination with other agents as therapy of severe forms of seizure disorders. Rufinamide therapy is associated with a low rate of transient serum enzyme elevations and with rare instances of clinically apparent liver injury.
